What does the architecture industry look like in most states? You might think that this is a basic question. Do these hurdles and bureaucratic red tape truly represent the excessive bureaucracy that many architects contend with? Can these issues be addressed and resolved? Other ethical questions that relate to architecture come to mind. For example, Is AI considered an existential threat to architecture? Are architects adaptable to technological changes or are they inclined to the traditional methods? In a recent statement, Jaque Bethke, an award winning interior designer, architect and Engineer shared her thoughts on these few of the biggest themes in the architecture industry.

Jaque concurred with much of the discussion and began sharing her perspective:

"The majority of experienced proponents in the architecture field, particularly those aged 55 years and above, who have played a dominant role in design, code compliance, and overall industry efficiency, are nearing retirement. Unfortunately, there is a notable absence of emerging talent to fill their shoes. The education system, in general, fails to equip students with practical skills, making the training process quite challenging. As a result, when these individuals enter the real world, architectural firms find themselves investing considerable time in helping them grasp the intricacies of the profession. This lack of dedication and preparedness has led firms to explore alternative options and take on fewer projects, ultimately impeding industry growth."

Jaque also highlighted the significant difference in earnings she experienced 30 years ago, underscoring how the business landscape has undergone drastic transformations.

Bureaucracy or Administrative procedures

Regarding regulations, Jaque expressed her skepticism about the claim, stating, "I don't really buy into that." She emphasized that new regulations are continually being implemented by governing agencies responsible for architecture codes and compliance layers to ensure construction quality and safety.

The concept of "glass half full, glass half empty" applies here. Contractors play a crucial role in helping clients understand the time frame and financial requirements, allowing them to make informed decisions. These rules and regulations are necessary, and it is part of a contractor's responsibility to set appropriate expectations for homeowners. However, she clarified that her team does not fixate solely on the design process, such as pre-designs, schematic designs, and design development. At the entry point of a project, they do not heavily focus on cost analysis.

This phase involves analyzing alternative products, not to compromise the quality of the outcome, but rather to find solutions that lead to the best end result. Jaque acknowledges that other architects may adopt different approaches, but she tends to disagree with those methods.

Regarding the hype around AI, Jaque shared her perspective and expressed her skepticism about it being a threat to the design industry. While acknowledging the value of AI as a great innovation, she emphasized that architecture requires a multifaceted approach. It's not merely about using cool computer tools; it's about being able to perform a wide range of tasks and leveraging smart technology to enhance the architectural process.
